Nov 25, 2016 – This year we Opted Outside an knocked off a hike on my bucket list. Flat Iron had always been a hike I wanted to do again. In the early 70s, I did a hike, starting at Hieroglyphic Canyon, traversing the ridge to Flat Iron and coming down. I had never been up the Siphon Draw to the top of Flat Iron. Today was the day. The trail was quite busy up to the Draw, but there the hikers thinned out. It still was busy, at some of the rock obstacles, sometimes we would have to wait to allow hikers heading down to negotiate first. On top, there were between 20 to 30 hikers.
This is a short hike, about 6 miles round trip to the top, but it took us nearly 6 hours to complete. The draw is narrow and shaded and cold in the winter. If you tackle this hike, don’t give up until you reach the top of Siphon Draw where after a short scramable (Photo 3) you are rewarded with a view of Flat Iron (Photo 4).
